Meet Leonie

Leonie

Hi, I'm Leonie. I'm a support worker for people who are deafblind or have other disabilities. I'm also a volunteer in the Lake Macquarie Deaf Social Group and a Deaf Liaison Officer for Emergency Services in the Hunter Region.

I'm a deaf person in a hearing family. After school I was frustrated with my education and wanted to improve it. So I learned how to access learning and training available in the community. I love to help people to work out how to get along with others. I believe in people with disability having a good life, with full participation in social activities and the community.

I can offer mentoring in:

  • getting more involved in the community
  • encouraging the elders who are deaf to participate in the community
  • developing skills to improve self confidence

I have a goal to develop my English Literacy skills so I can do further studies. I love crafts and swimming to relax. Sometimes I go camping and kayaking  in dams or rivers.
